About Byron Writers Festival

For three days in August each year a riveting line-up of writers and thinkers converge on the iconic coastal town of Byron Bay. Guests mix happily with Festival patrons who come from near and far to take part in Australia’s largest, regional literary festival. They are enticed, year after year, by the relaxed vibe, the incredible natural beauty of the area, and the compelling conversations and stories told in the open-air, beachside Festival site.

Now in its 21st year, the event attracts high calibre local, national and international guests from many genres and areas of expertise. Artists, musicians, politicians, photographers, architects, gardeners, philosophers and activists join more traditional storytellers to explore the myriad forms stories take.

With daily passes rather than individually ticketed events, patrons are able to dip in and out of sessions, adding to the relaxed feel of the event. The open-air location provides a calming, peaceful place in which to think, question, laugh, be entertained and inspired, all the while surrounded by nature.

2017 Program launch

This year’s program is informed by the poignant words of respected philosopher A.C. Grayling, who says:

To read is to fly: it is to soar to a point of vantage, which gives a view over wide terrains of history, human variety, ideas, shared experience and the fruits of many inquiries.

With this in mind, Festival Director Edwina Johnson and her team have curated a festival rich in diversity and thought-provoking content.

“Countless lovers of books and writing flock to our celebration,” says Edwina, “to share in conversations that ebb and flow, spawn insights, memories and conversations that inevitably carry far and wide. This Festival will especially highlight lessons and learnings from nature, and continue to examine the vital role of storytelling in our turbulent, confounding and ever-changing world.”
