Angel Olsen solo @ Byron Theatre - Byron Community Centre

You are here

It is fitting that with the recent release of Angel Olsen’s Phases, a revealing and intimate collection of B-sides, rarities, and demos from the past several years, that ANGEL OLSEN announces her most intimate Australian live performances yet with a solo tour through March 2018 that takes in a daring and delightful combination of venues across the country. Angel will perform music up close and personal from across her stellar career in gritty rock and roll venues, boutique theatres, art galleries and art centres in Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane, Hobart, Byron Bay and Sydney.

The Phases album collection of rarities includes a number of never-before released tracks that balances tenacity and tenderness, and is a deep-dive for existing fans, as well as a fitting introduction to Olsen’s enormous musical range for the uninitiated. For Olsen, it’s an album that allows a moment of thoughtful, reflective calm following a year of global touring, success and growth surrounding the release of the broadly acclaimed LP MY WOMAN.

During a run supporting Arcade Fire on the US West Coast in October, Olsen stopped by KCRW’s “Morning Becomes Eclectic,”and played a selection of songs including “Sans,” a previously unreleased home demo from summer 2015 that appears on Phases. “Sans” leans heavily on Olsen’s arresting croon and lonesome guitar. As she describes it, “’Sans’ was a song I wrote in between Burn Your Fire and My Woman, something short and simple – but about a big thing in my life: travel and what it can do to the psyche. When you’re out there and you’re working and moving so fast it’s difficult to really imagine a time when you were fully realized and known. You know, it’s hard enough to be known when you’re around! But then there are those people in your life that know you and don’t need you around all the time to be or feel close-I suppose it’s about that too. ;)”

“Even Angel Olsen’s outtakes are everyone else’s A-game.” – Pitchfork
