Dr Sketchys Anti-Art School

Dr Sketchys Anti-Art School presents another unpredictable and wild night of Burlesque Life-Drawing and saucy performance at The Byron Bay Brewery on Tuesday November 15.

As always we have found some of the country's most exotic and tantalising models and alternative performers so the lucky art-monkeys and bohemians of Byron and beyond can draw them.

This month we thought it was time for some aerial spectacle, and to help with that is one of Australias most legendary and dynamic performers, the beautiful Miss Lena Marlene !! Lena is a master of just about any aerial or acrobatic style you can name, so shes going to thrill you with some death-defying and graceful posing high above the drunken heads of the excited crowd below.

And from Lenas 'Scoundrelles' School of Pole Dance and Burlesque is the exquisite Miss Lillian Lace in her DrSketchys debut!

Mae Wilde will be back in the saddle as our stunning and manic MC, so its going to be a classic night of Sketchy fun and frivolity.

Theres music, sketching, drinking, food, Burlesque, art, gorgeous models, prizes, sketching and madness. You don't want to miss it, so be there early for a good seat.

Doors open at 6.00pm, and the Sketching runs from 6.30pm to 9.30pm. If you're drawing, bring your own art materials. If not drawing, just bring some friends, grab a Martini, and sit back to enjoy the fun and glamour. Its an over 18s event!

stART me up

Byron Bay Surf Festival presents ‘stART me up’
Saturday October 22nd 1-5pm
Byron Youth Services

When I was a kid I would scribble perfect wave after perfect wave onto my schoolbooks. I would take my drawings of waves home and show my Mum and she always encouraged me and told me they looked great. So I kept drawing them. When I was older I looked back at the covers on my old schoolbooks and my drawings were never really that great, but because of my Mum's encouragement I never stopped producing art, and I still do today! JMc

Byron Bay Surf Festival presents 'stART me up', a new art exhibition for kids, developed by local artist James McMillan, in association with Real creative designs, Wings, and Volcom clothing. The purpose of stART me up is to encourage youth art and to give new and emerging young artkids (some very young!) a valuable and real opportunity to hang and expose their work, in an exhibition type environment.

There are prizes in each category, including paints and paintbrushes from Eco paints, with the major prize going to the winner of the 14 -18yrs group, receiving a 6-month artist mentorship program with James Mc. There is also the overall 'Volcom artist prize': One artists work, overall, will be selected to be a part of the Volcom clothing high-Summer range for early 2012 as a Featured Artist on their range of T-shirts which will be distributed all around Australia and New Zealand. This is Huge!! Once the their design is released the winner will also receive 10 of these t shirts to share with family and friends. Yew!!

The artshow will be on display at the Byron Bay YAC located in Gilmore crescent off Lawson Street opposite Byron main beach. It starts at 1pm and there will be a gold coin donations at the door, which will enable you to see the awesome art, watch the youth rock bands, and checkout the skating demo at 3.30pm. So come along everyone and have some fun!

Entries close Thursday October 20th at 4pm and can be delivered to 2/9 Marvell street Byron Bay, along with the $10 artist entry fee and A3 size artwork. More info at: www.byronbaysurffestival.com

Sat Night Byron Bay Surf Festival

Saturday night 7-8.45pm: Byron Bay Community Centre
Andrew Kidman: Live music/film, Taylor Steele: Andy Irons short film

A night of live music and film from two of surfings most popular filmmakers, Andrew Kidman (Aust) and Taylor Steele (USA). First up at 7pm is Taylor Steele's raw short-film surf-doco on the surfing life of the late Andy Irons. Taylor, good friends with Andy, put together the footage earlier this year and has only shown the film once before in Andy's hometown on the Island of Kauai. Byron Bay Surf Festival is honoured to be showcasing this film in Australia. In the words of Taylor's wife Sybil, the film is set to the sound of one loud punk rock song! Taylor Steele's' first films along with his latest have all had this similar style…the best raw surfing in the world set against the sound of blaring punk rock.

Andrew Kidman is a surfer and artist who expresses his innate connection to the ocean, surfing and life through many mediums, including music, film and the written word. Works of note include surf films 'Litmus' (1996) and 'Glass Love' (2005), his book collaboration (photography) with artist Andy Davis 'Way of the Bird' (2002), his current film and book release 'Lost in the Ether' (2010) and his current album with his band 'The Windy Hills' 'friend from another star' (2011). Andrew Kidman has always written and performed his own soundtracks, and his music has come to the fore in recent times, earning his band The Windy Hills (formerly The Brown Birds of Windy Hill) gigs at Splendour In The Grass, Mullumbimby Music Festival and the Perth International Arts Festival; also writing and recording the score to the film Searching For Michael Peterson with legendary guitarist Tim Gaze; and editing and touring the short film sensation Last Hope. Last Hope is an entirely unique melding of film and live music that has astonished audiences from New York to Brisbane. It is in this form that The Windy Hills will be playing live, at the Byron Bay Surf Festival, to films by Patrick Trefz's, Mick Waters and Andrew Kidman.

Saturday night continues with a live Dick Hoole film commentary followed by The Grains (live music) both at Woody's Surf Shack.
