MUSIC STARS JOIN NRMA NORTHERN RIVERS CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS

Australian music royalty Richard Clapton and Kasey Chambers have joined the NRMA for its Bright Futures Centenary road trip tour kick off on the Northern Rivers at the end of this month.

Richard Clapton and Kasey Chambers will headline entertainment at the event on the Northern Rivers on the weekend of 29 February and again on 6 June in Parramatta.

In a move designed to encourage Australians to road trip to regional communities, the NRMA Centenary celebrations will feature five free family events across regional NSW and a final event in Sydney. The call to action has been further highlighted by recent bushfires and the ongoing drought.

The events will feature new ‘big things’ art, kids activities, food trucks, music, entertainment, local talks and much more including interactive installations, activities and games, with a focus on celebrating local flora and fauna and promoting local entertainment and art.

As well as Richard Clapton and Kasey Chambers, the Northern Rivers event will showcase local acts including Pink Zinc and The Palm Wine Ambassadors while kids will love Bunny Racket, and Spaghetti Circus Inc. Food trucks will also be on site all weekend showcasing local businesses and producers.

For those wanting to get further involved in their local area, community groups will have pop-ups and talks scheduled throughout the weekend. Groups attending include Rainforest Rescue, Byron Bird Buddies, North Coast Regional Landcare Network, WIRES Northern Rivers, Zero Emissions Byron, Surfing NSW, Friends of the Koalas and COREM.

Families, Members and individuals can register to attend the free weekend-long festival at www.mynrma.com.au/tour. Details for the six festivals are:

  1. Northern Rivers North Byron Parklands 29 February - 1 March
  2. Tamworth Bicentennial Park 14-15 March
  3. Kiama Black Beach Reserve 4-5 April
  4. Wagga Wagga Apex Park 18-19 April
  5. Queanbeyan Showgrounds 2-3 May
  6. Parramatta Parramatta Park 6-7 June

NRMA Group CEO Rohan Lund said the company’s Centenary road trip celebration was about showcasing the best the state had to offer and to encourage a boost in regional tourism.

“When the NRMA conceived its Bright Futures tour 12 months ago the idea was to use our Centenary as a platform to support regional areas affected by drought – nobody foresaw the devastating bushfire season that lay ahead,” Mr Lund said.

“The motivation behind these events is now more critical than ever. We want people to get in the car and join the NRMA for our road trips celebrations. Bring the family and while you’re there spend some money in the local communities.

“Crucially, we hope our Bright Futures tour will be the motivation for Australians to book a domestic holiday or go on a road trip this year and visit some of these remarkable destinations. These communities are fighting to rebuild. They need our help and the best way to support them is by booking a local holiday.”

FALLS FESTIVAL 2019/20, THAT'S A WRAP!

As much of the country battles the devastating bushfires and extreme conditions that have wreaked havoc across the New Year’s period, the indomitable spirit of the Australian people has never been in clearer focus.

Photo Kurt Petersen Photography

From the tireless work of the CFA, the RFS and our volunteer firefighters, to the hundreds of spare beds on offer, through to the millions of dollars raised in fire relief so far - it’s obvious that the best of us are doing all we can in a time of great need. All our thoughts here at Secret Sounds and Falls Festival are with those affected locally and nationally in the current conditions.

This unflappable character was writ large during the Lorne leg of Falls Festival this year, as the unavoidable weather conditions forced an early closure of our stunning festival site after only one day of festivities.

Far from dropping their bundles, the loyal Falls crowd were absolutely amazing in their response to this body blow, patiently packing up their tents and waiting in line to leave, keeping spirits high and cobbling together alternate New Year’s plans as they went. Some of these plans weren’t too far removed from what they would’ve been served up amongst the ancient trees of the Otway Forest either way, as several generous artists put together huge fundraisers in lieu of their headline sets.

“A huge thanks to you, our Falls audience. While it was disappointing, your overwhelming support around the mid show Lorne cancellation was nothing short of inspiring. A lot of people, wildlife and firies are doing it damn tough at the moment and your safety was our priority. Thankfully the rest of Falls ran beautifully with some of our best festivals yet, including standout performances from Halsey, Disclosure, Vampire Weekend, the legendary John Farnham & Baker Boy with too many others to mention. And of course, a mega shout out to our awesome Falls team who put in huge amounts of care, good old-fashioned hard work and heart which make Falls Festival what it is. Thanks to all, here’s to a safe 2020!!”
Jessica Ducrou & Paul Piticco xo
Co-CEOs

Melbourne’s inner city was flooded over the last weekend on 2019, with huge shows by the likes of Halsey, Peking Duk, Yungblud, Holy Holy, Baker Boy, G Flip and many more all raising nearly $100,000 for the CFA and related authorities. Overall, the response to this difficult situation was a credit to both the artists and their devoted fans.

This joins the $18,000 raised for the Salvation Army relief efforts during Falls Black Friday sales, over $23,000 donated from Byron ticket sales to the RFS. Further news on the festival’s involvement in Sound Relief fundraising coming soon.

Elsewhere in the country, Falls Festival further cemented its reputation as Australia’s premiere New Year’s festival.

Perfect weather and a pristine site greeted revellers in Byron Bay as the likes of Halsey, Vampire Weekend, Disclosure and PNAU strutted their stuff. The masterful Peking Duk were given the opportunity to ring in the new decade, setting their controls for the heart of the sun and levelling the main arena with a banger-laden set.

Falls’ Tasmanian leg in Marion Bay allowed direct access to the stunning white shores of nearby beaches and patrons took full advantage. Towels in hand, they hit the water and spliced some serious sun with an unforgettable set from the legendary John Farnham, among many others. Therapy dogs also roamed the grounds, proving a huge hit with literally everybody and the Smalls Festival family arts precinct was also buzzing from go to woah.

Out West, our friends in Fremantle continued to build on what is fast becoming a signature event of the Port City’s calendar: Falls Downtown. Across the weekend, the breezy, tree-filled oasis of Fremantle Oval played host to our trusty headliners, as well as an exclusive set by recent J Award winner Matt Corby.

Corby’s set bookended another banner year for Falls Festival, which showcased yet again that the convergence of fabulous music and art, dazzling surrounds and unbeatable crowds will always provide the perfect start to a New Year.

If you missed out on a memento from the shows, the online merch store is now up and running.

The team at Falls want to thank their staff, artists, local authorities, emergency services and of course their ever-loyal patrons who continue to make Falls Festival the most amazing experience as they head into their 28th year. Exciting updates and festival announcements coming in 2020!

Brenda Miley the Business Women in boardshorts - Lets Go Surfing

Surfing has been part of Australian culture for decades. Australian surf resonates on our pristine beaches and Australian waves. Today surf schools are lining up the coast from North to South, but 25 years ago this wasn't the case.

Brenda Miley started Let's Go Surfing out of the back of a Kombi van in 1995 at the iconic Bondi Beach as an idea to encourage more women into surfing.

One of a few women in Sydney’s 1980’s surf scene, Brenda was also a competitive surfer. She was always disappointed at the lack of women not just in competitions, but in surfing in general. Then, in 1995, a lightbulb moment hit.

“I was one of the only female surfers,” she says. “With the surfing bug fully entrenched in my life, I competed in all levels of competition from club level through to Australian titles, and discovered the absolute joy of travelling the world to surf. It was often daunting, being the only woman in the surf. I wanted to change the way girls experienced surfing and wanted to encourage them. And I thought to myself, I’m a PE teacher. I’ve got these skills, why don’t I start teaching women how to surf?” And that was the little piece of a life puzzle Brenda’s heart desired: ”Armed with a passion for teaching, surfing and making a difference to women’s lives, I discovered running a surf school was exactly what I was meant to be doing.”

Brenda’s Kombi van surf school is now a multi award-winning surf school head-quartered in Australia’s Sydney’s home of surfing, Bondi Beach, with operations in Maroubra, La Perouse, Byron Bay, Ballina and Lennox Head. Today the LGS Team includes local and international Male and Female surfing & Stand Up Paddle Board Coaches and Instructors, who love sharing their expertise and knowledge with their guests from all over the world. LGS has recently launched a new Stand Up Paddle Board Tours Lets Go SUP in the Beautiful New South Wales Northern Rivers regions of Byron Bay and Ballina.

Lets Go Surfing and Lets Go SUP run a daily surf and SUP lesson for kids, women, groups, and corporations, for all people of all levels. To find out more about our surf and SUP lessons give a call our friendly staff at 02 (02) 6680-9443 or visit our www.letsgosurfing.com.au

2020 Byron Bay Surf Festival - 10 years of Surf Culture!

The 2020 Byron Bay Surf Festival celebrates 10 years of bringing surfers, musicians, artists, filmmakers, activists and water-people together to celebrate surfing and all that it culturally encompasses!

"We didn't aim for ten years and there was definitely no master plan to make anything huge or whatever. It was just like, 'our culture and the art of surfing deserves to be nurtured and celebrated...let's do this'...and we've pretty much just surfed that wave through each year". JMc

We dreamed up events, we invited friends, the biggest legends of surfing, artists, filmmakers, activists, and musicians and we prayed for waves. And because the Byron community and the larger surf community loved it and supported it, it's been a huge success!

Thank you for joining us to celebrate surfing and all that goes along with it!! It's been nothing but, as Bob McTavish describes BBSF, "F-U-N...FUN!!"

This year, like every year, we have a packed weekend...(see 3-day weekend!) New events, film premieres, live music, art shows, surf sessions, surf comp, surf markets, workshops, special guests and more…
