5 best bakeries in Byron Bay and surrounding towns

You are here

From almond croissants and sausage rolls to a good loaf of crusty sourdough, everybody has a favourite bakery treat.

The Byron Shire is home to a whole host of incredible bakeries serving up classic Australian baked goods right the way through to French pastries. So, we asked our Facebook fans to vote for their favourite in the region as part of our ongoing Best of Byron series, and the results are in.

Here are the five best bakeries in Byron Bay and surrounding towns (in alphabetical order).

Bruns Bakery

Situated in Brunswick Heads, a small holiday village about 15 minutes north of Byron Bay, Bruns Bakery is a much-loved local favourite. Serving up a range of cakes, pies, pastries, and sandwiches – as well as excellent coffee – Bruns Bakery combines old-world charm (the building has housed a bakery since 1950!) with seriously delicious baked goods crafted daily on-site. You can even watch the magic happen by peering into the theatre kitchen.

Byron Bay Hot Bread Kitchen

A family owned and operated business since 1982, Byron Bay Hot Bread Kitchen is a true staple. Offering a whole range of classic bakery treats – think scones, old-school slices, and traditional pies – the team behind Hot Bread Kitchen continue to use their own, tried-and-true, original recipes.

L'ultime Patisserie & Chocolaterie

If you’ve ever been to Byron Bay, chances are you’ve walked past the L'ultime Patisserie & Chocolaterie window display, stopping to stare at the colourful, too-pretty-to-eat collection of traditional pastries and cakes. With a delicious range of fruit flans, lemon tarts, strawberry mousse cakes, almond croissants, and more, L'ultime is a slice of France in the heart of Byron Bay.

Scratch Patisserie

In Mullumbimby, a short, scenic 25-minute drive from Byron Bay, you’ll find Scratch Patisserie. Established in 2010, Scratch began by selling specialty cakes, tarts, and fresh pastries at the Byron Bay and Mullumbimby Farmers Markets. Now with a shopfront of their own and a team of traditional bakers and pastry chefs, Scratch continues creating delectable bakery treats all made from scratch.

Suffolk Bakery

The perfect place to grab your morning coffee and a tasty breakfast treat, Suffolk Bakery is a locally owned and operated business serving up fresh, made-on-site baked goods loved by locals and visitors alike. With a relaxed atmosphere and plenty of dog-friendly outdoor seating, this gem of a bakery truly has it all. Pop in on a Saturday and enjoy live music performed by local talents.
