Welcome to Byron Shire

This is Bundjalung Aboriginal country. The area has great cultural significance for the Aboriginal people and deserves the respect of all who live and visit here. The Aboriginal heritage of the area enriches all our lives. Please take the time to find out about cultural importance and abide by the wishes of the people. At the Lighthouse you can visit the Aboriginal information room and take a ‘Dolphin Dreaming’ tour.

We, as locals have worked consistently to protect and preserve this special place as so many other places were over developed. It took great effort and determination to stand up for what we believe in and now Byron Shire has become popular for its difference, both naturally and culturally.

We are very proud of our beautiful environment, our beaches, wetlands, forests and the rare birds and animals that are part of the landscape. The way that we live impacts on our natural world and the quality of life of others. Take care to use water wisely, it is a precious resource. Think carefully about your rubbish as it can destroy the beauty of the place and endanger the lives of wildlife. Think about walking or cycling instead of using a car. If you are on holidays, take the time to see the area in a low key, close way and discover the pleasures that exist for the observant.

The region abounds with quality art, food, health and entertainment. The coast and the hinterland offer all these things. The shire also features towns and villages with great historical significance.

Enjoy these things and take care of yourself and those around you. As a holiday destination, the Byron Shire offers so many opportunities for you to experience but there are risks. The surf can be dangerous, so be careful when you are having fun. There are also insects and animals that you may not have come across before and there are people who may try to take advantage of carefree visitors. So be informed and aware, so that your experience here is a positive memory that stays with you when you leave.

Please be respectful of the local community who have struggled to preserve this area. Keep in mind that we are a small community who have as a uniting theme, the protection of our environment and our way of life. Have a great stay in Byron Shire, enjoy it and show respect.
