Brief Description of the Towns and Villages
Alstonville
A small village located just south of Ballina, about a 35 minute drive from Byron Bay. As with much of the hinterland behind Byron, popular with macadamia nut growers.
Ballina
A coastal town at the mouth of the Ricmond River, with a population of about 17,000. With its coastal beaches and waterways, Ballina is an excellent place for many water sports. Ballina is about a 30 minute drive south from Byron.
Bangalow
A historical village with a population of about 1,000 (including me!) about a 10 minute drive west of Byron. The main street features historic buildings, cafe's and restaurants as well as a friendly pub with plenty of interesting antique, craft and specialty shops.
Brunswick Heads
A small coastal village located at the mouth of the Brunswick River, with a population of about 1,800. Brunswick Heads is home to the annual "Fish & Chips" festival each year in January. Located about a 20 minute drive north of Byron.
Casino
A small town located on the Richmond River with a population of about 11,000. The annual Beef Week festival provides true country entertainment. Casino is located about an hours drive west Byron. For more information visit richmondnet.com.au.
Clunes
A village with a population of about 500 located about half way between Byron Bay and Lismore. Clunes features many examples of early federation houses and old churches.
Kyogle
A small town located on the Richmond River at the base of Fairy Mountain (346m). Often refered to as the "Gateway to the Rainforests", the town has a population of about 2,900 and is about an hours drive west from Byron.
Lennox Head
A small coastal town with a population of about 3,900 located about half way between Byron and Ballina. Lennox Point is an internationally renowned surf break. Apart form the beach, the fresh water tea tree lake, Lake Ainsworth, offers excellent picnic areas.
Lismore
The regional centre, with a population of about 45,000, is about a 40 minute drive west of Byron. Lismore is also home to the Southern Cross University. Visit the Lismore City Council web site for more information.
Mullumbimby
A small inland town with a population of about 2,800 sits at the base of Mt Chincogan. Located about a 20 minute drive north west of Byron.
Nimbin
Surrounded by world heritage National Parks and put on the map with its Aquarius Festival in 1973. It has a population of about 400 and is about a 50 minute drive west of Byron.
Ocean Shores
In 1968 it was established as a resort and recreation development, with a population of about 5,000 it remains the fastest growing town on the North Coast of NSW. Located about a 20 minute drive north of Byron.
