Federal

Federal is a small village, 25 minutes' drive from Byron Bay or Bangalow. It has a general store, which really lives up to its name in providing practically everything from grocery items and liquor to fuel and a post office. Nearby is the long-defunct butcher shop, now a restaurant also offering accommodation. In the surrounding area there are numerous beautiful guesthouses giving the sort of accommodation city dwellers dream about: lush tropical gardens in quiet locations, limited guest/room numbers, gourmet breakfasts and the notion that you need do absolutely nothing but put your feet up, marvel at the scenery and relax.

If you do venture out, Federal is close enough to the World Heritage rainforests and national parks for which the area is famous. Minyon Falls, Protestor Falls, the Nightcap National Park, Mt Warning and the Coolamon Scenic Drive are just some of the spectacular places you can visit during your stay.

While it may appear a sleepy country hamlet, Federal has a host population of sea-change baby boomers who have invented their own culture. For example, at the Federal Hall on the second Saturday evening of each month Reel Films shows a 16mm movie to much acclaim.

How to get there:
Federal can be reached from the Pacific Highway by either turning off on Coolamon Scenic Drive, 2km north of the Bangalow turnoff, and turning right at the first stop sign; or by taking the Lismore road out of Bangalow and following this road through the hills right to Federal.

Federal Accommodation
The Tin Dog is a Bed & Breakfast with stylish accommodation, delicious breakfasts, acres of beautiful gardens. "A serene rural retreat created with exquisite good taste in what seems to be an almost Singapore-like subtropical oasis" SMH Dec 04.
