Brunswick Heads

Brunswick Heads is one of those classic mouth-of-a-river seaside towns that Australians remember as the site of numerous family summer holidays in tents and caravans. Situated at the mouth of the Brunswick River, the town still has quaint echoes of those days, but at the same time is an increasingly-sophisticated place. Sporting good cafés and restaurants, 'Bruns' now offers much more than the family barbecue.

There are three Council-owned caravan and camping grounds on the river. Indeed, wherever you go in Brunswick you are on the water, from the little harbour and the north and south arms of the river to the ocean. You can hire a 'tinny' - a small outboard-driven dinghy - and explore the river while dropping a line over the stern and admiring the fish, turtles and rays in the turquoise waters.

Brunswick Heads is great for families. Not only is there easy access to the ocean beach, but the river offers a wonderful playground for messing about in boats. Fishing from the bridges is a local pastime, while the pub has live music and great food. A small marina for fishing craft offers a picturesque scene and an attraction for pelicans, while the accompanying fish co-op has a superb range of freshly-caught fish and seafood and a fish-and-chip takeaway.

The Fish and Chip Festival in January and the Bikes and Kites Festival in August are both fun festivals for the whole family. The Fish and Chip Festival includes a wood-chopping contest, fireworks and traditional fairground. The Bikes and Kites Festival attracts people of all ages on two, or sometimes three, wheels to fly their kites and get into the sort of family fun that you thought had died in the 1950s. But Brunswick is by no means stuck in a time warp: the good coffee, international cuisine and range of retail therapies is indicative of the twenty-first century.

Like Bangalow, Brunswick Heads used to be dissected by the Pacific Highway, but the main street is now much quieter. The range of accommodation is increasing all the time, and Byron Bay is only 15 minutes away for a full range of tours and activities.
