HULALA CAFÉHawaiian eat-in and takeaway café Hulala is Byron Bay's only Hawaiian-style licensed café, and is a favourite local eatery especially amongst the surfing community. It is located about 5 minutes out of the main CBD along Bangalow Road, next to the Blues festival office, making this one of Byron's best-kept secrets. Opened in September 2002, Hulala offers an original combination of Hawaiian, Asian, Mexican and Pacific-Rim cuisine (sorry, no ham and pineapple!). All our recipes are housemade, using fresh local and organic produce where possible. The open-air structure is of bamboo and thatched roofing, enclosing the courtyard and creating a tropical-style hut. The cosy lava lounge is filled with an abundance of unique Hawaiian curios, lava lamps, antique fabrics and hula girl photos. Music begins nightly with relaxed ukulele melodies, Don Tiki, Lounge and Elvis in Blue Hawaii, and sometimes a bit of Jack Johnson too. At outdoor garden area called 'Gillian's Island' is the place to be in summer. Hulala is licensed and serves a range of Hawaiian style cocktails, beer, wine and sake. However, you are welcome to bring bottled wine only. Cocktails $7.50, beer and wine from $4.00. Dinner specialties include Hulala's signature Pupu Platter with goat-cheese wontons, Duck Lumpia, Korean beef, Cajun fish, sesame chicken, vegetarian fried rice, artichoke rolls, three salads and dips. Most popular dishes, especially for takeaway, are Cajun fish tacos, Thai chicken tortilla and vegetable frijoke enchilada. Or try the chef's signature surf and tiki mixed plate or miso-citrus prawns. Be sure to save room for a lava-flow, an original Hawaiian dessert of chocolate and coconut 'haupia' custard.
