For the first time since opening in 1939, the Gold Coast Airport welcomed over 6 million passengers to the region. Now, the airport is undergoing rapid upgrade and expansion with Project LIFT, an acronym for ‘Let’s Invest For Tomorrow.’
Owned by Australian company QAL (Queensland Airports Limited), Gold Coast Airport is the gateway to South-East Queensland and Northern New South Wales. The airport acts as a key contributor to the region’s economy, fostering over 4,500 local jobs.
Over the last decade, the Gold Coast Airport has transformed thanks to the investment and support of QAL. In 2007, a 10 million dollar runway expansion allowed wide-bodied aircraft to operate at the airport. This opened the opportunity for direct international flights, which have since expanded to service Mainland China, Japan, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore.
2010 saw a 100 million dollar terminal redevelopment, doubling the size of the existing building. Since this expansion, passenger numbers have increased by 10 per cent.
Project LIFT marks the next phase of the Gold Coast Airport’s transformation, with stage one kicking off this year. A 300 million dollar redevelopment of the airport has been approved by the government, and is set to be completed ahead of the 2018 Commonwealth Games. This redevelopment will not only greatly benefit the region’s economy, but will also help sustain its reputation as a world-class tourist destination.
Stage two, to commence mid-2018, will see a complete refurbishment of the current terminals. The contemporary design will reflect the unique environment and cultural heritage of the area.
Project LIFT is a real game-changer for both the Gold Coast, and Northern NSW. Project LIFT will be the first and last impression visitors have of the city, including the media and athletes travelling from around the world for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
